Day 1: Windhoek -> Grootfontein

We picked up the car from the car rental agency in Windhoek – African Tracks. The decision to rent from them was based on the daily rates, vehicle condition, help in case of emergencies and customer reviews. We got a short introduction about 4x4 driving from them as both of us didn’t have any experience. But theory is one thing and the actual experience is another thing, which we soon found out.
I was very excited as it is a completely different experience in terms of the size of the vehicle, handling etc. Moreover, I love driving in general. The Lady drove the first leg of the trip as I was not so keen to drive in cities. We stopped at a supermarket in the city to do the necessary shopping. We had already prepared a list of must have things and added new stuffs as and when we came across it in the shop. By the time we left the city it was already mid noon. And we had around 450 kms ahead of us today.

The destination was Roys Rest camp about 40 kms after Grootfontein in the direction of Caprivi. It started raining heavily on the way. At some point the intensity was so much that I had to slow down a lot. In between I was also doubtful whether we will be able to find the camp before sunset. On the positive side the landscape was amazing. The typical ‘road to infinity’, with just nature on the both sides, which I always loved about Namibia. The clouds, the thunderstorms, rain and nature – it was magical.
I thought of looking for some other camp on the way so that we could put up our tent before dark. Since it’s the first time we are using the roof top tent it is going to take more time to set it up. Luckily we were able to locate the camp in time. It was a nice camping place with lot of ‘creative art’ stuffs all over the place. We were able to put up the tent without any problems. We had our first night out there. It was nice. The night was a bit colder than I expected. But we never had any freezing nights in the whole trip. Very comfortable climate, at least at nights!
